What’s Next?

It is a question we ask ourselves many times throughout our lives.

What’s next?

The next job. The next relationship. The next decision. The next chapter.

Recently I heard someone being asked that very question.

She smiled and simply replied,

“I don’t know.”

Her answer stayed with me.

Not because it lacked certainty, but because it carried something deeper.

It carried trust.

For much of my life, I believed I needed to know what was coming next. My mind felt that if I could just see the path ahead, I could finally relax.

Yet when I look back, the moments that shaped my life most profoundly were never part of a carefully designed plan.

An unexpected invitation. A chance encounter. A conversation that changed everything.

Life has surprised me again and again.

Looking back, I can see that Life has often been wiser than my plans.

For many years, I also believed that life was asking me to become a better version of myself.

To improve. To grow. To become more peaceful. More spiritual.

There is beauty in all of that.

Healing matters. Learning matters. Growth matters.

And yet, over time, something within me began to soften.

The question slowly changed.

Instead of asking,

“How can I become someone better?”

I found myself wondering,

“What if nothing essential is missing?”

“What if our deepest nature has not been lost, but simply forgotten?”

Perhaps wisdom is not about adding something to ourselves.

Perhaps it is gently allowing everything that is not our true nature to fall away, until Life can flow freely through us.

Nature seems to understand this.

The river does not strive to become a river.

The birds do not practice being birds.

An acorn does not struggle to become an oak tree.

Life simply expresses itself.

Perhaps we are not so different.

Maybe our deepest evolution is not becoming more, but allowing more of our true nature to be lived.

For me, this has become a very different way of meeting the question, “What’s next?”

I still don’t know.

But I no longer experience that as a problem.

Instead, I am learning to trust the quiet unfolding of Life.

To be present.

To listen.

To trust.

To allow Life to live through me a little more freely than yesterday.

Perhaps that is enough.

Perhaps that is where freedom begins.
